Academic Sonata Op. 3 (for solo piano)

This three-movement, fourteen - minute, sonata was originally named ‘Sonata for piano’. It was written when I was a student at University College Cardiff - and first performed by Richard McMahon, January 1980, in the music department’s ‘New Hall’, Corbett Rd. It would have been composed in 1979.

A decade or so later, this and three other student sonatas were rebranded ‘Academic Sonatas’ and given opus numbers. My thinking behind the use of this ‘Academic’ tag was to differentiate these early ‘student’ pieces from the more recent work I was writing at the time.
