Breaking news on the 29th of October 2014 was the announcement of the discovery of a previously unknown Chopin Waltz. As someone who grew up playing and loving the Chopin Waltzes this was very exciting news. It was, however, a bit of a disappointment to discover that this ‘new’ waltz was only 24 bars long - and could not, to my mind, by considered anything more than a sketch - a possibility - and, as it transpired, not one that Chopin took further. Despite this, I quite liked what was there, and thought it would be a challenge to take these 24 bars as the starting point for a more reasonably-sized piano Waltz.
As it is thought Chopin’s manuscript dates from the 1830’s I’ve called this ‘new’ piece: 190 Years: Waltz in A minor.
