Cymru Dewi Sant / In Heavenly Love Abiding

SATB and organ

Duration: 5'20"

There are two versions of this composition:

1. With the words Cymru Dewi Sant (A.E. Jones)

2. with the words In heavenly love abiding (Anna Letitia Waring) (1823 -1910)

The melody, called Penlan, was composed by David Jenkins (1849-1915); and is probably best known as the tune to the hymn In Heavenly Love Abiding. The words by, A.E. Jones (also known as Cynan) and are, as you might expect, well suited for a Welsh St. David's Day concert.

It is probably fair to say that this piece is more of a ‘reworking with variations’ than a straight-forward arrangement of the tune: There is a new organ introduction and while the outer two verses are relatively simple re-harmonisations the middle two verses are more like variations on a theme. The second verse is chorale prelude-like, while the third verse is harmonised in a more contemporary close-harmony style.
