Mearc

flute and piano

Total duration: 19 mins

This three-movement sonata was originally composed in 2006 for violin and piano. This version for flute was made at the suggestion of Catherine Handley.

Mearc is the old Anglo-Saxon word for 'boundary'. It is also the term from which 'Marches' (as in 'Welsh Marches') is derived. The Marches is a part of the country I'm very familiar with having driven many journeys back and to from Wrexham and Cardiff - calling in at Ludlow for a browse around the market.

A recording by Catherine Handley (flute) and Zoë Smith (piano) is available to stream and download from all the usual places.
