Academic Sonata Op. 1 (for flute and piano) is the first of five ‘academic’ sonatas written for various instrumental groupings. The ‘Academic’ tag stems from the fact that these pieces were written when the composer was a student at Cardiff University during the late 70s.
This particular work was first performed eighteen years later on July 21st 1995 by Roger and Rosalie Armstrong as part of the Gower Festival.
The work is in three movements and lasts approximately twelve and a half minutes.
In July 2006 Catherine Handley and Andrew Wilson-Dickson recorded the work for a CD called Ariel - a disc of works for flute and piano by Welsh composers. (Available from fieldgatemusic.com)
